Bastimento is a drone-based electroacoustic composition derived from field recordings collected across Cilento, in southern Italy.
Through a fragmented horizontal sound flow, the album aims to replicate the perceptual experience of hearing the undertow of the Mediterranean Sea, as filtered through the narrow inlets that punctuate this stretch of coastline.
Started in 2022 with a site-specific project in three acts called in the same way, Bastimento has been designed for the area centered on Mount Bulgheria in the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park. Three actions in three different places for three different approaches to sound, in a close relationship with the architecture, urbanism and landscape that hosted them: performance, installation and collection of field recordings.
This album continues the original project as its fourth part, developed from the same group of sounds. It includes Serranuda (stereo) — a carefully edited live recording of the third action — and is conceived for deep listening.
By emphasizing the acoustic memory embedded in these geographies, Bastimento conveys the atmospheres of these environments, characterized by a peculiar but still familiar sense of solitude. It investigates sound’s relational and memorial capabilities, its power to narrate personal experiences while simultaneously crafting an affective and cohesive ambiance. An entire territory unfolds through modulated sounds, becoming an embrace to rest within.
